Meet Our Editor
Jen Jilany
I am trained in grammar, structural/substantive and stylistic/line editing, as well as copyediting, by George Brown College in Toronto. I am also trained in developmental editing of fiction by the Editorial Freelancers Association. I recently completed an internship as a writer and copyeditor for a Toronto-based online magazine, and over the past two decades, have edited everything from corporate communications, technical software requirements, and PhD applications, to memoir, fiction novels, and short stories!
I have served on the Executive Committee of Editors Canada since 2023, and am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association. I facilitate writing workshops through the Writers Collective of Canada. I also coordinate a partnership between Editors Canada and the local public library called Blue Pencil Writing Consults, which provides authors with professional editing services in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Canada. Kyle, a Blue Pencil partner, recently said:
"Working with Jen on the Blue Pencil Writing Consults program has been an absolute pleasure. Jen brings a remarkable combination of leadership, knowledge, and organizational skills to the table. As a co-lead, she's not only supportive and dependable but also incredibly flexible, effortlessly adapting to changes while keeping everything running smoothly. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and it's clear that she’s passionate about helping others grow. Jen’s ability to engage with others, network effectively, and manage projects with precision has made her an invaluable asset to Blue Pencil Writing Consults. I highly recommend Jen for anyone seeking a talented, organized, and thoughtful professional to collaborate with!"
Literature is my first love. I was reading Little House on the Prairie at the age of six, and had a poem published at the age of eight. I am a mom of two sons, indoor golf enthusiast, and Reiki Master.

Why Up Style?
Up style is a capitalization style. Within the intricacies of the English language, there are standards ("rules") related to grammar; however, when it comes to style, there is more flexibility (i.e., preference). My background in marketing and advertising trained me to understand how something as simple as the use of capitalization can drive impact by emphasizing key words, and therefore the message we convey. Hence, my business name!
Draw on my love for writing in any form, and desire to help people achieve their goals and reach their highest potential. I am fast, accurate and affordable!
